INTERPRET:

“That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse”

(Walt Whitman)

As artists and makers, we first interpret – and then are, in turn, interpreted. We must surrender to our process, knowing that when we yield up our work, the viewers’ reaction is entirely their own, beyond our control.

The creative process begins with questions, and when we arrive at what feels like a pause or temporary conclusion for ourselves, presented in the gallery, we are only passing on that line of inquiry.

How do we interpret the images, sensations, and glimpses that perturb us, or excite us, and inspire us?  How do we interrogate and translate into our work the values that motivate us? How conscious is our relationship to the material? At the heart of this exhibition, we work to understand our materials and work with them to tell a story that is theirs as well as ours. How do our hands, following motions that may go back millennia, leave marks that feel brand-new?  How do we find ourselves through the act of making? Is this process explicit? – do we seek to be known in our work, or by the process that drives it, or do we wish to expose only a part of this?

We come together in this exhibition, to share with you our work, we ask you to participate through the act of viewing, and we seek to further understand ourselves through your eyes. To interpret your interpretation and so begin again.
