About

Hettie Johns is a London based maker and artist whose focus lies within ecological study and thinking, creating works that question and explore relationships between humankind and the natural world, using only natural fibres and pigments.

Statement

Within this project, I chose to internally challenge the disconnection between humankind and the natural world by exploring the intrinsic connection of my mind to the natural space.

When surrounded by the encapsulating sensory experience of untouched natural space, the mind stills, and the magnetic calmness of the space engulfs you. It is this elemental connection of self and space which I wanted to capture and work within.

Natural pigments such as hibiscus, rose petal, oak gall and copper were used to capture the mind’s experience, creating abstract markings that work to seize that moment.

Such paintings allow the moment to then be drawn upon later, enabling me to explore my practice through a rested and calm lens. All woven artworks seen within this presentation have been produced without aesthetic pressures, each decision carefree and uncalculated, transcending the ego and fulfilling emotional instinct.
